How Dentists Clean Teeth with Braces – Ask a Dentist in Spring, Texas

Braces are used to realign the teeth to achieve a perfect smile. Having braces on usually calls for one to pay more attention to their teeth, particularly with regards to dental hygiene. In addition to visiting your orthodontist every six weeks for the braces to be adjusted, you also have to visit the dentist to have your teeth cleaned at least once in every six months. Cleaning teeth with braces is particularly difficult given that there are metal frames on the surface of the tooth. Vita Dental takes you through the procedure of cleaning teeth with braces at the dentist.

Cleaning procedure

If you have braces on, you should inform your dentist or dental hygienist that you wear braces when booking your appointment. This will allow them to be prepared appropriately. Cleaning teeth with braces usually take a bit more time compared to cleaning teeth without braces. Much care has to be taken when doing the cleaning to ensure that the wires and the brackets are not damaged.

There is no special procedure for cleaning teeth with braces. The procedure is the same as that of cleaning any other teeth, only that more caution is exercised. Some dentist will take off the braces wires before they clean the teeth while others do the cleaning with the braces still on. When taking the latter approach, a smaller brush is used for cleaning the crannies and the hooks.

Here are the steps followed

1.    Physical exam

The first step in teeth cleaning usually involves the dental hygienist performing an oral examination of your teeth to detect any possible infection that may have developed over the weeks. The examination will dictate how the cleaning will be performed; whether to administer treatment first or administer treatment after the cleaning.

2.    Scaling

What follows is the removal of plaque and tartar that may have accumulated on the teeth surface. The scaling process is usually performed with the aid of an instrument known as a scaler. The scaler is scrapped off the surface of the teeth leaving it clean and with its natural color. If the plaque deposits are larger, an ultrasonic scaler can be used to remove the deposits through its vibrations.

3.    Brushing the teeth

Once the plaque and tartar have been removed, the next step involves brushing the tooth with a toothbrush. Hygiene specialists who clean without removing the metal frames use smaller brushes for the brushing. Much care is taken maneuvering around the metal frames to prevent damage, while at the same time ensuring that the teeth are cleaned effectively.

The toothpaste used takes and smells just link any other normal toothpaste. However, it is much stronger and removed material on the surface of the teeth more effectively making them clean.

4.    Expert flossing

What follows is the dental hygienist flossing the teeth. Again, much care has to be taken to ensure that the braces are not damaged if they were not removed. Flossing helps in getting rid of food particles that may have accumulated in between the teeth and cannot be removed by normal brushing. It also helps in removing plaque that may still be stuck in those areas.

5.    Rinsing of the teeth

Once the surfaces of the teeth and the areas in between have been cleaned thoroughly, rinsing follows. Rinsing basically involves washing off of the debris that has been removed using the fluoride fluid. Given that there are braces present, the rinsing should be done with a lot of fluid and thoroughly to ensure that no debris sticks on and underneath the metal frames. Again, more caution should be taken when rinsing underneath the frames.

6.    Tooth polishing

To make the teeth look brighter and feel smoother, polishing is done. The polishing is also aimed at making it difficult for place to accumulate on the teeth due to the smoothness achieved on the surface. The brighter and shiny looks also help detect and remove any stains easily when doing daily oral hygiene practices.

7.    Fluoride treatment

Having braces only serves to realign the teeth, but the braces do not shield the teeth from infection. Fluoride treatment application is usually applied after the polishing is complete to strengthen the enamel and help protect the teeth from an acid attack that could further lead to decaying of the teeth. The fluoride comes in different forms and tastes depending on the preferences of the patient.

In case the dentist or the dental hygienist removed the metal frames before cleaning the teeth, the braces are fitted back into place at this point. Services of an orthodontist could be acquired to fix the braces back.

There is not much difference in the procedures for cleaning teeth without braces and teeth with braces. The only difference is the amount of caution that is put to ensure that the hardware is not damaged. In case you have braces on, and you want your teeth to be cleaned, don’t hesitate to call your dentist for teeth cleaning appointment as it is possible to have them cleaned.
