What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial teeth that are mostly made of titanium which are placed on the jaw using a surgical procedure by a dentist or oral surgeon. Simply put, it is a replacement for a missing tooth or teeth.
Dental implants function, look and feel like natural teeth. If you have lost your tooth then a dental implant will preserve your natural facial contours, allow you to eat everything you would chew with a natural tooth and give you your smile back.
Components of The Implants
The implants are made of titanium or zirconium posts that are placed into the missing teeth jawbone. The fixture bonds with the titanium to create a foundation for the artificial tooth. The screw or small posts are then attached to the implant. The posts act as the anchor of the artificial teeth as they provide the needed support. The abutment or crown is the artificial tooth that is usually made of titanium or zirconium and is put on the post.
There are two types of dental implants:
- Endosteal implants are implants which are surgically placed into your jawbone. The dentist uses a screw and a cylinder placing it directly into the bone. The bone is allowed to heal, and then the crown or the tooth is placed on top of the implant. In this type of dental implant, all the components of the implant except the tooth are found on top of the implant. This allows the tooth to look natural. This is the most common type of implant.
- A Subperiosteal implant, on the other hand, is found on the bone. A metal frame with posts is placed on the jawbone. The healing process allows for the frame to be fixed to the bone. The crown or tooth is then placed on top of the post. The procedure is usually done on those who cannot be done the bone grafting procedure.
Dental implants can also be in the form of partial or full implants.
- The partial implant replaces one or two of the patient’s teeth. These are secured on top of the implants such that one no longer needs the metal clasps that are not too good looking and also put more stress to the adjacent teeth which leads to dental work being done on them too.
- Full implant dentures replace a full set of teeth. For instance, they can be put on the upper or low jaw. This kind of implant enhances your facial impression and smile. One does not need creams or pastes to sanction the denture to the roof of the mouth as the implant is firmly fixed.
The procedure of getting an implant may you require you to visit your dentist severally as it might take a few months. First, the doctor will take an x-ray and impression of the patient’s jaw and teeth to be aware if there is enough space, bone, and tissue for the implant. Once this is determined the area is numbed and the implant surgically placed into the jaw bone. The healing process and the integration of the implant and the bone usually takes three to six months. The process of healing is known as osseointegration.
Duringosseointegration, the patient will be able to eat a soft diet. Once this process is complete, the implants are attached to small posts or the anchors of the artificial teeth. The artificial teeth are then placed to cover and hide the posts. The whole procedure may take six to eight months. Not to worry though, most patients experience a very minimal disruption in their lives during the procedure.
Due to dental implant technological advancement, single stage implants are now possible where the patient may not need to visit the doctor for the second procedure that uncovers the implant. The healing process takes only six weeks before the artificial teeth are placed on the posts. However, in some cases, an immediate load of the final prosthesis is possible such that the patient does not have to wait with a removable denture or stay toothless. In this case, it is possible for the implants to be placed at the time the tooth is extracted which minimizes the surgical procedures.
