Thanks to their effectiveness, dental implants have really eclipsed the other available missing tooth replacement options and people are rushing to get these dental gems. A lot has been said about dental implants and they have received a lot of praise from all corners. Despite all this hype and praise though, there is quite a large number of people out there who are skeptical on the effectiveness of dental implants. This is why we want to address one of the most commonly asked questions here at Vita Dental- Are dental implants right for me?
A lot of patients suffering from tooth loss come into our offices and more often than not, that is the first question that they ask. Dental implants are a superior alternative to the other available restorative procedures such as a dentures and crowns. But does this make them ideal for everyone with missing teeth? Are there scenarios where dental implants are not advised? We talked to Dr. Jisoo Shin, DDS on the use of dental implants and here is what she had to say;
Before delving into the appropriateness of dental implants, it is only fair that we briefly describe what they are. Dental implants are tiny titanium ‘roots’ that are surgically placed in the jaw to act as the anchorage for a dental crown. They provide a strong foundation for fixed or removable dental prosthesis designed to match your other teeth in the mouth. Through osseointegration, titanium is used to form a long lasting bond with the bone and then a prosthesis is fixed on the implants.
For implants to be effective therefore, they require enough bone for anchorage and healthy gums for extra support. Anyone with healthy gums and enough bone therefore is eligible for dental implants. Does this mean that implants are not ideal for growing children? Are people with bone recession ineligible for dental implants?
Well, for growing children, dental implants are not advised until they are at least 14 and have lost their milk teeth. Children under the age of 13 don’t have well developed gums and their jawbones are not developed enough to anchor the implants and it is therefore not advisable to install the implants in their young mouths. It will not only inhibit the growth and proper development of teeth but can lead to other complications. People who have diminished jaw bones should also look to other options to replace missing teeth because dental implants require enough bone for anchorage.
The other class of people who should be wary of implants and should alert their dentists beforehand are heavy smokers. Smoking has a negative impact on the integrity and strength of teeth and the dentists needs to check on the state of the jawbone before deciding on whether to proceed with the surgery or not. Equally if a patient has a history of suffering from uncontrolled chronic disorders such as diabetes and heart diseases, they should report the same to their dentists. Diabetics are at risk of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia depending on the type of diabetes they are suffering from. They is also the danger of slow wound healing. It is imperative therefore to report any of these complications to your dentist to avoid any complications after the surgery.
