Braces Vs Invisalign For Overbite Treatment

There is a very common dental condition called overbite. Overbite is a medical state whereby either the upper front teeth protrude over the lower front teeth when teeth are clenched together. It accounts for more than 70% of all dental problems in infants. Although overbite is a condition that goes unnoticed for many people there are cases where the degree or percentage of overbite is extreme and needs medical attention. The ideal overbite percentage in human beings should be between 5% and 20%. Anything above that is detrimental.

The exact cause of overbite is not known. It is believed to be hereditary though some cases point towards poor oral habits among children. Whatever the cause, overbite is not a condition most people are comfortable living with. It has a good number of both psychological and health detriments attached to it. With an overbite, one can’t smile freely before people, his/her speech is affected and there are some cases of joint pains. It is a condition that needs to be treated as soon as possible to avoid any further ramifications.

There are a number of treatments that are used today to treat overbite but the most commonly used are orthodontic braces, surgery and invisalign. Although surgery is a viable option, it is not encouraged and there the two most commonly used form of treatment are braces and invisalign. The debate however rages between these two. Which is the best treatment option for overbite treatment? To help settle the debate, we have provided the differences between the two to help you determine the best treatment option for your overbite. Here are 9 differences between braces and invisalign;

  1. Cost- The first factor to consider when choosing the right treatment for overbite, is the cost of the option. As far as cost goes, braces are normally cheaper than invisalign. The average price of braces ranges between $2,000 and $6,000 while the invisalign go for anything between $5,000 all the way to $8,000. This all depends on whether you have insurance or not.
  2. Working Mechanism- Braces work by dictating the direction of growth and the shape of teeth. The metal brackets glued to the tooth hold back the overgrown teeth and the wires connecting the brackets give the teeth the desired shape. Invisalign on the other hand are invisible retainer like aligners that fit into the overgrown teeth and straighten them by restricting their growth.
  3. Time to completely heal- Braces and invisalign need roughly the same period of time to correct overbite situations. Braces however tend to be quicker and this is attributed to the fact that they are permanently glued to the teeth during the treatment period. Invisalign on the other hand require that the owner maintains discipline of wearing them at-least 22 hours a week for them to have full effect on the teeth.
  4. Comfort – Invisalign are more comfortable than braces. Braces have cases of mouth sores and pain in the gums especially during the early stages of treatment. Invisalign on the other hand only retain the teeth and have very little contact with the gums and teeth.
  5. Maintenance – Braces need more care and maintenance than invisalign. Braces need to be cleaned carefully while invisalign pretty much need to be washed in clean lukewarm water. Braces can accumulate food remnants which pose as an ideal hub for bacteria to flourish.
  6. Convenience –When treating overbite, as much as you want to correct the situation, you want a treatment option that gives you freedom and convenience to do your day to day tasks. You can’t remove braces whenever you want to eat or do something with your teeth. You can’t remove them if you want to brush your teeth. If need be, then you have to visit your dentist to have the braces removed. Invisalign on the other hand can be removed at the user’s convenience. Whenever you want to do anything with your teeth, you just pluck them out and you are good to go.
  7. Effectiveness- When it comes to effectiveness, braces reign. Although this is my personal opinion, I tend to think that braces are more effective for overbite than invisalign. Yes, invisalign will help you straighten teeth without people even noticing it but as far as the end results are concerned, braces do a much better job. The recently introduced elastic bands and precision cut are making invisalign more effective than they were in recent times but still braces tend to do better than them.
  8. Follow up visits – When you have braces installed, you have to visit your dentist at-least once every month for follow up visits. The dentist will then check on the progress of the teeth and tighten the wires if need be. Invisalign on the other hand require that the aligner trays are changed twice in a month. You should therefore make sure you visit your dentist at-least twice a month.
  9. Risks involved- As far as I know, both are a safe means of treatment. They are both safer than surgery because they retain your natural set of teeth. I don’t think there is any risk involved so long as you visit a qualified dentists.
