When I think of bright, clean, and healthy teeth; I automatically think of celebrities with those sparkling smiles. Unfortunately, most of us do not have the resources available to make that happen… or do we?
Here are 15 tips to achieve that dream smile:
I know flossing can sometimes be cumbersome, but it is really good for your teeth and gums. The benefit of flossing, over the normal toothbrush or mouthwash, is that it can reach deeper into the teeth. Professional Dentists recommend flossing once per day.
As we get older, our teeth tend to decay faster, causing us to make more trips to the dentist. You can slow decay by strengthening your teeth with a fluoride supplemented toothpaste.
Simply rinse, with water or antibacterial mouthwash, after every meal. This is also a preventative measure to curb tooth decay because you’re flushing any remaining food particles.
The most common perpetrators here are sugary sodas and sticky candy. This can greatly benefit your health, and your teeth, in the long run.
Don’t Smoke or use Smokeless Tobacco
Tobacco in general puts a lot of strain on your teeth and gums, accelerating the decay process. Tobacco can also lead to gum disease and cancer.
Out with the old, in with the new
Change your toothbrush, or toothbrush head, every three months. Your toothbrush will lose its form after a few months of use, making it less effective than a new one.
Avoid foods that stain
Over time, Coffee and tea can leave a tan-ish stain on your teeth. If you can’t completely give up your morning cup, try switching to herbal or green teas.
Supplement your body with Calcium
This can be achieved one of two ways: 1. Buy supplemental calcium vitamins, or 2. Eat calcium rich foods. Calcium supplements can generally be found at your local grocery store. Calcium rich foods come in the form of; dairy, greens, leafy vegetables, and nuts.
Use caution with teeth whitening kits not prescribed by your dentist
With these, it can be easy to use too much, too often. Whitening kits can erase your enamel, and cause sensitive teeth and gums. If you want to know the best whitening kit to use, ask your dentist.
Visit the Dentist Care
Although we’re not overly thrilled to go to the dentist; this is super important. If you haven’t had a checkup in longer than 6 months; make an appointment. They will check for gum disease and other types of oral cancer. If they are caught in their early stages, they will be easier to treat.
Teeth, not tools
You should only use your teeth for one thing: eating. Don’t use your teeth to open packaging, untie knots, or hold things, as this can easily lead to painful broken or damaged teeth.
An apple a day, keeps the dentist away
Although this age-old saying may not be completely true; it can still work to your benefit. If you are looking for a snack, eat an apple. The balance of acidity and fiber are great for your teeth and will act as a micro-toothbrush.
Most mouthwashes contain alcohol, which can dry out your gums leading to bacteria buildup. Next time you’re at the store, look for alcohol-free mouthwash.
Brush when you wake up and before bed
Brushing after waking up removes the plaque buildup from sleeping. Brushing before bed removes the plaque built during the day.
The cause of bad breath is the buildup of bacteria on the back of the tongue. If you scrape your tongue (using a tongue scraper) and brush, you can remove that bacteria.
