How Dentists fix Chipped Teeth
Veneers are the most suitable option if your chipped tooth is more of a cosmetic issue. The procedure involves the dentist covering the chipped teeth with porcelain covers to yield a tooth surface that is smooth and natural-looking. Veneers are quite a good option if the chipped teeth are small in number; say one tooth or two. Otherwise, it is quite an expensive option. They, however, last up to 20 years proving to be a good solution for fixing chipped teeth.
The concept used in veneers is the same concept used in crowns. Porcelain cover is used to coat the whole teeth, unlike veneers where it is only the coating of the front surface of the tooth that is done. Crowns are a more appropriate option if the chip causes you to lose a significant portion of the tooth. It is an excellent way to repair your smile fast and prevent the remainder of the tooth from being exposed to further damage. Also, it is an attractive option to go for economically if you cannot afford to get an implant. They are much cheaper as compared to dental implants.
Root canal therapy, also, falls into this category. If you have a good section of your tooth broken but the root is intact, the dentist can opt for a root canal therapy to replace the tooth. A pin is placed in the canal to build just enough structure out that can provide sufficient support for a crown that is to be made. After the crown is molded, it is cemented over the pin to form a new complete tooth.
Dental crowns usually require two dental appointments. The first appointment is meant for the assessment of the tooth and the surrounding bone structure. If one is an eligible candidate, the tooth is prepared appropriately to create room for the crown. An impression of your teeth structure is taken by the dentist using a putty-like material and the impression sent to the lab to be used in molding the crown. The second appointment usually is after two to three weeks during which the crown is fixed.
If the chip is small and not quite complicated, the dentist usually suggests bonding as the most suitable way of fixing the condition. The bonding procedure is simple and involves a composite material being molded over the other area of the tooth that is healthy. First, the dentist begins by roughening the enamel remaining after the chip comes off and then the composite is shaped to create an extension that is close to natural-looking. The composite is then set and hardened instantly by a blue light. Bonding is an ideal solution for small, cosmetic chips. If they are taken care of properly, they can get to 10 years before they wear off.
While a chipped tooth, if small, can seem like a non-issue that can be easily ignored, it is essential that you visit a dentist as soon as you have an incident of a chipped tooth to restore your tooth structure and prevent further damage from happening.
